I make my releases without surround-sound audio, since it eats up a ton of space, and so my rips can be compatible

If you wish to play the subtitles in Media Player Classic, or another DirectShow player (WMP included), then
install VobSub (check guides online). You can also use VobSub to change the color, placement, etc. of the subs.

If your video looks slightly "washed-out" (whites aren't true white, blacks aren't true black),
play in Media Player Classic Homecinema, go to View > Options... > Playback > Output, and choose Overlay Mixer.
