Description

I ripped the Italian audio out of the Dual-language version of this film.
The vidstream is the same as that one. This saved around 120 mb in size.
This seems to be the only normal sized version of this film, the others
are bloated and oversized DVD-copies.

>ÚÄÄ¿ TAWP also sets out as a leftist critique of Bush's right-wing       ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ America, but switches halfway to make fun of liberals. Manderlay    ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ is more layered, however.                                           ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿                                                                     ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ Grace (Bryce Howard) her father and his gangsters, after having     ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ left Dogville come upon Manderlay, an old plantation where blacks   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ are still held like slaves, complete with whippings.                ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿                                                                     ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ Grace uses her fathers gangsters to free the blacks from the        ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ whites and takes it upon herself to guide the blacks to real        ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ freedom. However, this proves more complicated than she first       ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ thinks. The storyline of white betrayal and trickery of blacks is   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ maybe a tat too predictable, and Von Trier wisely leaves it         ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ pretty quickly. There's hardship as a sandstorm destroys the        ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ crops. This happened because what seemed a good idea at the time,   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ chopping down trees to maintain the slave cabins, turn out to be    ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ a disaster: the trees were not so much a garden for the old         ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ missus as a protection for sandstorms. But this is overcome with    ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ hard work and determination and it seems that democracy and self-   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ reliance might take on hold on the old plantation. Even the         ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ relationship with the former owners, now workers on the             ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ plantation is harmonious. The next step to sent away the            ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ gangsters, thereby truly leaving the power to the former slaves.    ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿                                                                     ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ What follows, is not really so much as prove, that democracy and    ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ true freedom is hard to instill at gunpoint, but more a statement   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ that states it's very hard to change a society just like that.      ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿                                                                     ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ In the end, Manderlay is perhaps not so much a critique of          ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ American society, nor of the continued racism, of the still         ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ enduring disenfranchisement of African-Americans by whites          ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ (even though it DOES strongly speaks out against that in it's end   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ sequence), as it is about paralysis of communities.                 ÚÄÄ¿

>ÚÄÄ¿ Or is it? While the film might seem to start out as a critique of   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ white oppression of blacks, stil, and in the middle changes to      ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ critiqueing blacks for still enslaving themselves, it turns out not ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ to be neither, nor both. With the revelation at the end that the    ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ situation at Manderlay was far more a cooperation than a            ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ oppression, (Glover as Wilhem: "How dumb do you really think we     ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ are?") 'Manderlay' seems wants to tell us that every society gets   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ the political structure it needs, and that societal change is not   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ only hard, but damn slow as well.                                   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿                                                                     ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ A real plus about Manderlay is that Von Trier pisses off            ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ Americans. They get all upset that a foreigner dares to criticise   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ their country while never having been there, but when they do the   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ same to others, for example Iraq (occupying a country might count   ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ as the severest form of criticism), it's supposed to be okay?       ÚÄÄ¿
>ÚÄÄ¿ They expect everyone to applaud?                                    ÚÄÄ¿
