Talk to any band nominated in the Best Live Act category 
at any of the UK's Award shows, and you'll generally get 
the same response: "There's no way we'll win - that's 
Muse's award." 

That Muse put on an unbelievably good live show, that can 
be appreciated whether you like their music or not, has 
become something of a modern rock fact, accepted by 
plenty of people who've never actually seen them live. 

So are they really that good? And what is it they do 
exactly that makes them so untouchable in the Live Act 
category? 

Well, now Muse are releasing a DVD of their sell out 
shows at Wembley Stadium last June. Called H.A.A.R.P., it 
opens in cinemas on 17 March, and there were fan previews 
around the country last night (11 March.) And any band 
who want to take Muse on in that Live category, should 
probably go and take a look. 

Performance films seem all the rage at the moment: Sigur 
Ros enhanced their own live performances with some 
stunning cinematography, amazing landscapes and local 
colour for Heima, and U2 made the whole experience 3D for 
maximum up-close-and-personal effect. But Muse have just 
stuck to showing the gig, pure and simple, with no 
annoying backstage moments or fan reactions, but minus a 
few tracks from the night itself. 

And it is, indeed, a masterclass. From the dramatic 
opening, as the band rise from the ground in the middle 
of the crowd, to the perfect moment of grace and beauty 
as ballerina-acrobats spin suspended above the crowd, 
Muse seem completely in control of the 70,000+ crowd. 

They're not immune to stadium rock cliches: there are 
knee slides, costume changes and plenty of overhead 
clapping moments, but the band don't have to egg this 
audience on. Frontman Matt Bellamy barely says two words 
to the crowd, but from the opening words of Knights Of 
Cydonia they're singing every single word. It's clear 
that it's not the handclaps that lead to two sellout 
nights at Wembley Stadium, but Muse's monumental sounds 
and impressive musicianship. 

And it's the chance to actually watch them play that 
makes this DVD work. It's obvious the lights, stage setup 
and those ballerinas would all have been a million times 
better from the middle of the mosh pit, but what you 
can't see from there is Matt Bellamy's truly impressive 
piano skills in Butterflies &Hurricanes, or his own 
unique slide guitar style in the intro to Invincible. 

The film also captures the odd beautiful moment; like 
helicopters and the new stadium's signature arch 
reflected in the glass lid of the piano, or the view from 
the stage as thousands of mobile phones light up on every 
layer of the massive venue during Soldier's Poem. It also 
manages to reflect the full on pelt of Muse at their 
ferocious best, with super-fast edits hammering and 
flashing the images home with the same intensity Muse are 
playing at. 

But the true delight of the film is a chance to see what 
all the fuss is about, and exactly why they won those 
awards, from a comfy seat with a bag of popcorn. Pay 
attention wannabe Live Act winner, take a look at 
H.A.A.R.P. and see Britain's most acclaimed live act 
doing what it does best.
